How can you select the stitch to use in a pattern when doing needlepoint?

There are a large number of needlepoint stitches that you can choose from. The basic types of needlepoint stitches are the tent stitches - continental, basketweave and half cross stitch. However, there are also others like the alternating basketweave, the T-stitch, the nobuko stitch, the diagonal chevron stitch, the woven plait stitch, the tressed stitch and more.

The one thing that is common in almost these stitches is that they are close weave stitches and in most cases you cannot see the canvas at all. The one stitch that is relatively airy is the T stitch in which the canvas can be seen easily. While selecting the stitches that you want to use, this is the one that you need to think about because it does not look good if the canvas is not a nice one or if it does not have the kind of color that will ok good in the pattern that you are creating.

Other than the T stitch there is hardly anything that you need to worry about in terms of being right or wrong in the selection. The selection of the stitch depends on your choice and the kind of pattern that you want to create. Start with some of the common stitches so that you get comfortable with doing needlepoint work. And as you move forward and graduate in the art of needlepoint, you can start using the other stitches to show your expertise. You will also see that the stitches become neater as you practice these over time.
