Needlepoint thread can be made from a large variety of material. Typically needlepoint thread is made from wool, silk, cotton or metal. One of the easiest ways in which you can classify needlepoint thread is based on the shape of the thread. It is not a good idea to change the shape of the thread that you are using in a project because different shapes create different characteristics of the stitch. For example, round threads create stitches that are crisp and distinct. Ribbon threads give a seamless look to the embroidery that you have done. The threads that you will find in the market include round, chainette, flat and stranded.

Round thread cannot be divided into smaller groups or plied. Some examples of round thread include pearl cotton, filament silk, metallic braid, tapestry, crewel wool and kreinik braid. These htreads should be used when you want each stitch to look distinct and different from the other. Stranded threads are those that can be divided into strands. Different strands of the thread are twisted together and made into a skein to be sold in the market. Different types include embroidery floss and Persian wool.

Flat threads cannot be divided like strands and they are flat like a ribbon. These are great when you want to create a pattern that looks seamless, especially in large areas that you need to cover. They are also good for long stitches since they can show a flat straight stitch. Examples include neon rays, flair and ribbon floss.
